In 2004, I became a mom. My world immediately changed the moment I saw that little heart flickering on my doctor’s ultrasound machine. One of first decisions I made as a new mom, was deciding to give breastfeeding a try. I soon found myself passionate about it and unwilling to give up. I would gaze at my daughter as she nursed, lying motionless and content. She was oblivious to everything else in the big world around her, wanting only to lay in my arms for nourishment. Oh, how simple it was, these moments of bonding so perfect. I could do this breastfeeding thing, no problem!

Ha, right! Despite a degree in early childhood, reading numerous books and attending a breastfeeding class, not once was it ever mentioned that nursing would change into a wrestling match between baby and breast. My daughter was distracted by the smallest sounds, the slightest movement, and I had to kick my husband out of the room just to nurse her. She was pinching me, pulling at my hair, and interested in exploring anything she could stick her finger in, at, or around.

As I watched her nurse, I noticed her interest for my jewelry. In particular, she would grab a necklace, of great sentimental value, that my grandmother had given to me. In fear that she would soon figure out a way to destroy it, I decided I needed to create something that was safe for her to twiddle. It was then I created a nursing necklace for her (or should I say me). She was mesmerized, interested in nursing, and she had permission to touch this necklace without me brushing her hands away. She loved it and so did I!

Being passionate about breastfeeding and helping other mothers who were experiencing the same problems, I began my mission. I would create mommy-inspired jewelry. It would use strong, durable cording that wouldn’t break when pulled upon. The beads would be non-toxic and safe for her fingers. I would bridge functionality with style and create Mommy Necklaces™. Every piece I made would be handmade with TLC. It would free breastfeeding mothers from the dark, quiet rooms they had excused themselves to when it was time to nurse and it would give mothers the chance to wear jewelry with confidence again.

It has been over five years since I made my first necklace, and now my necklaces are found all over the world. I’ve sold to a few countries I can barely pronounce and each day I’m greeted with another thank you note in my inbox. Our retailers span across the globe and every month our product is introduced into new storefronts. My customers come back for themselves, their family, and friends.

And, while my designs were originally created for breastfeeding mothers, I find mothers of all ages and stages, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding, enjoying them. Mommy Necklaces™ have allowed for mothers and care-givers to wear necklaces with confidence again. I have a ’savvy ladies’ club that wears them simply because they’re pretty!
