1.How many children do you have?

I have two beautiful children, Makenna is 10 and Ty (not Tyler) is 7. Makenna is my scholar, dramatist, poet, dreamer and veterinarian. She is everybody’s best friend, and caregiver. She loves (and can sometimes be irritated at) being the big sister! Makenna’s favorite past time is reading. A bomb could go off and she would be sitting in the middle of the rubble, unaware of the chaos around her, book in hand. Ty is my consummate comedian, rough and tumble, puddle stomping, stinky, shy and cuddly big boy. He loves to hang out with dad, but ends his night with a prayer and a cuddle from mom-best part of my day!

2.  What is one of motherhood's biggest challenges for you?

There are so many ways to answer this…raising loving children, making sure I am flexible, patience, balance, picking up underwear and pint sized socks off the floor, etc. Lately the most common thought around our home though, is to take care of others before yourself; Be a Blessing. I kind of borrowed that phrase from my friend and fellow MNer Kim, but it seems to resonate in every single aspect of my life. It is my daily mantra, and it reminds all of us and teaches my children that other people may need help, or love or a kind word. I am trying to teach them to make a difference in the world- it’s a big challenging place!

 3. What is something you have overcome that has contributed to who you are today?

Loaded question here! Sometimes I feel like the things I have overcome should be a Lifetime Movie or ABC afterschool special (you need to be 40 to get that one). In the most basic of explanations, I would have to say that my mother’s passing at 53 was pivotal for me. I was 30 when she died. At that time, we had no children and were feeling very young, corporate, and independent. Her passing changed how I looked at everything. Youth, age, family, friendships, connections and marriage. Gone with her are many questions about my upbringing, family stories and history. We had a challenging relationship in my 20’s (another blog perhaps) and I am still devastated and lonely for her. I love her and miss her daily, but she taught me many things about how to be a parent and some because I know how NOT to be. Her passing has actually made me grow, love, and wear my heart on my sleeve more that I should. I have learned that it is ok to put your soul into something and get nothing in return, because at least you are being true and honest with yourself-and you must be true and honest with others!

4. After overcoming something, you need a vacation. Right now, where would you go?

Really? I get a vacation?! My dream vacation would be to go to Europe, specifically England and Ireland and Scotland! I love the idea of walking to see the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, and taking Jon (husband) to St. Andrews for a round of golf. The history and architecture fascinate me. And can I say, how cool is it to just listen to the people talk! (Yes, tacky American tourist here!) Makenna just wants to meet Harry, Hermione and Ron!

5. What Mommy Necklace would you wear the most on your vacation (aka your favorite collection at this moment!).

Seriously, I HAVE to pick one? My staple favorite is hands down Twilight Flat Rock Square…however, I have to say that the Zeal Flat Rock is catching up. I get mine at 18”, I am a choker girl, but I love the Preludes and wear some longs as wrap bracelets too.

6. Sorry to tempt you with hopes of a vacation... but if you do find alone time, how do you spend it?

I just got a new bike for the first time in literally 23 years, so that is a priority for me. I love the feel of “flying” down the road. It untangles my mental knots. And on a rainy day, nothing beats a good book. My two most recent favorites are, “The Discovery of Witches” and “The Help”. I have a love for all things fiction. Though truth be told however, I love the family time so much, the “me” time always takes a back seat!

7. What is one thing on your bucket list?

No thought to this one, at all!!!! Bucket list or Dream list? I have auditioned (yes, 20 page questionnaire and prepared a 3 minute video) to be on “Survivor” since the first day it aired. Now really, any mom could win…we survive every day!

8. What is one of your favorite indulgences?

One? Sorry-three way tie here…Milk Chocolate/Mocha Latte/Haagen Das Coffee Ice Cream…hmmm I sense a common thread here…YUM!

 9. Who is one of your heroes? Why?

My husband! We have been married for 14 years (known each other for 20) and he can deal with me like no one else. He is the middle child of three and has always been the one people lean on and depend upon, listen to and respect. He is mentally tough, physically strong and gently romantic. He is my best friend and has helped me deal with many things. He honors and respects me, protects our family, tells me the truth (even the stuff I hate to hear-ugh!) and loves his children like nothing I have ever seen. I fell in love with him on our first date and feel honored that he feels the same about me.

10. Why do you enjoy beading and working for Mommy Necklaces?

Not only is it fun and great to be able to hang out with my family and work, but I have a servant heart. It makes me feel good to know that I am doing something that gives others joy. I literally have a hand in every single piece I make and I know that the time and energy I spend will result in something wonderful. I also appreciate the hard work it takes to be a mom, not to mention the time and mental and physical stress. If what I do can help and give that mom a breather for even a moment, or make her feel beautiful (‘cuz she IS)…it matters to me. They might not see it that way, and I am good with that. But there is always a smile when they open their package!
